Burnham is a small village with a big road problem: the A4 (Bath Road) runs straight through the middle of it, Lent Rise Road feeds traffic in from the south, and the level crossing by Burnham station can back up the High Street at peak times. A driver who only knows the postcode and not the village will sit in that queue. Ours know to cut through Godolphin Road or approach from Britwell when the crossing is down, which on a bad afternoon is the difference between a 10-minute pickup and a 25-minute one.

Most Burnham bookings fall into one of two patterns. The first is Heathrow: Burnham to Heathrow Terminal 5 is a straight run down the A4 and onto the M4, usually 15 to 20 minutes outside rush hour, longer once the Slough traffic backs up after 4pm. The second is local — the school run down to Burnham Grammar, a trip into Slough for the shops or the train, or a pickup from Burnham station itself for anyone whose connecting train has just been cancelled.

Burnham station is a request stop on the Elizabeth line route, which means fewer trains than Slough or Maidenhead and more people needing a taxi when one gets cancelled. We treat the station as a standing pickup point, not an address you have to explain — tell us Burnham station and a driver knows the layout, including which side the taxi rank isn't quite big enough for on a Friday evening.

Further out, we cover Burnham Beeches, the National Trust woodland that brings visitors and dog walkers who often don't drive out this far themselves, and the housing off Boveney Road and Britwell Road on the village's northern edge. Lent Rise, on the southern edge of the village, is mostly a residential run for us — regular bookings to and from the shops on Lent Rise Road, and the odd late pickup from the recreation ground when an evening match finishes later than planned. Cippenham, technically part of Slough but closer to Burnham than to Slough town centre for most of its streets, is another area where knowing the ground matters: Cippenham Lane floods in heavy rain at the point nearest the railway bridge, and a driver who doesn't know that will try to push through standing water rather than taking the short diversion via Farnham Road.

Boveney, down by the Thames towards Dorney, is quieter again — rowing club traffic on race weekends, and a scattering of houses that don't always show up cleanly on satnav. We take bookings there by describing the turning off the B3026 rather than relying on a postcode pin that occasionally drops you two fields away. If you're booking from a phone with poor signal in that stretch, calling ahead to confirm the pickup point saves everyone time.

Fares from Burnham are straightforward: a short hop into Slough or over to Taplow station runs under £10 for a saloon, Windsor and Maidenhead sit in the £10 to £20 range depending on the exact pickup point, and the Heathrow run is a fixed £18 saloon or £28 executive regardless of which terminal, confirmed exactly when you book so there's no argument about the fare at the other end.
